About Counselling

This page addresses two questions you may have in mind as you think about starting counselling.

What can I expect of counselling?

Counselling provides a confidential setting in which to talk to someone about what's concerning you. The experience of being listened to is in itself therapeutic.  From the first meeting, many people speak of the relief of sharing their thoughts and feelings. For many it is a first experience of being listened to without criticism or judgement and it opens a window of hope for change and personal development.

What approach do you take?

My approach to counselling is psychodynamic which means that I have been professionally trained and have considerable clinical experience in listening to people attentively and of thinking carefully with them about their lives.  The psychodynamic approach is based on the belief that our current difficulties may be related to early experiences in a way we are unaware of.  This means that we often repeat patterns in how we relate to others and to ourselves.  This repeating can get in the way of how we wish to lead our lives. Understanding how this is happening helps free up choices for the future.
